Constructed tropics

Inspired by the freedom of form and natural irregularity found in botanical gardens contrasted against formulaic architectural structures in the city, this collection creates unexpected contradictions in composition and design. These contrasts are particularly shown through the multi-layered drawings where florals are composed next to geometric stripes and shapes.
The prolific Victorian biologist and botanical artist, Marianne North, was a major inspiration for the spirit of this collection as her passion for the tropics and travel is reflected in the rhythms of colour and imagery used.
The outcome of this project was a collection of fashion fabrics and illustrations designed specifically for a client who has a 'kooky' style and passion for travelling.
